Grootbos Forest Lodge Fire Damage

It has been confirmed that Grootbos Forest Lodge will re-open 15.12.2016 after the main building suffered extensive damage during a fire early August 2016. Since the overflow from Forest Lodge has been accommodated as far as possible in to Garden Lodge, both Garden Lodge and the Villas are fully booked up until 15.12.2016 and then for the peak season until early January 2017. Please take into consideration when planning itineraries for this period that it is impossible at this stage to obtain confirmations for Grootbos up until early January 2017.

“New” Product – Pinnacle Point Estate (Mosselbay)

After the Estate was liquidated a few years back, we are very happy to announce that under new Management a huge investment has brought this property back into our portfolio for golfers.

The Golf course has been revamped to its original status, the clubhouse has been redone and offers fully serviced restaurant facilities for self-catering guests and we will have access to some Lodges and Villas (on a self-catering basis).

We are currently contracting Golf and Stay/Play rates and will include these in our rate sheet soonest.

Shonglolo Express Update

Recently we had the opportunity to view the transformation and refurbishment of this train. This process is ongoing and for the duration of 2017 the train will offer a combination of refurbished and not yet fully refurbished carriages – whether clients will receive a refurbished or not yet fully refurbished cabin will be a case of “ luck of the draw” and we have no influence over this allocation. Rates for fully refurbished and not fully refurbished cabins will be charged the same.

The train has received a “Rovos Rail” lounge and dining carriage and the refurbished cabins resemble Rovos Rail standards minus the frills and luxury additions. Essentially Shonglolo compared to Rovos Rail will be a four star product once completed and the difference will mostly lie in the details such a 3 course instead of 4 course menus, bar purchases not included, glass instead of crystal glassware, stainless steel instead of silver cutlery, etc., etc..

Sizes of Cabins: Gold Cabin same size as Pullman on Rovos Rail and Emerald Cabin same size as Deluxe Cabin on Rovos Rail.

Welgevonden Reserve – a reminder of this Wilderness area offering fantastic value for money Safari Lodges

(Driving time 3 ½ hours from Johannesburg & Malaria Free)

“the rich and diverse Waterberg region offers an amazing variety of unspoilt habitats. Overall, more than 129 mammals, 350 birds and 2,000 plant species can be found within these habitats.

The savanna areas of The Waterberg consist of rolling grasslands and a semi-deciduous forest with trees such as Mountain Syringa, Silver-leaf Terminalia sericea and Lavender tree. The canopy is mostly leafless during the dry winter. Native grasses include Signal grass, Goose grass and Heather-topped grass. Indigenous grasses help to support native species including impala, kudu, klipspringer and Blue wildebeest.

Other mammals indigenous to the Waterberg region include giraffe, rhinoceros and warthog. The African Porcupine makes use of the region’s cavernous cliff habitats. The cliffs also provide a home for the Fever Tree which the bushmen believed had a special power to allow communication with the dead.

The area’s birdlife is predominantly to be found in and around the region’s many rivers and wetlands. The riverine areas are also home to the Nile crocodile and to hippopotamus.

As if all this wasn’t already enough, Welgevonden Reserve’s big mammal population, the Big 5 are in abundance as well as cheetah, brown hyena, honey badger and a whole lot more.”
