From Desk to Dust: Xavier hits the bush

From 17.03.26 – 22.03.26, I, Xavier, was one of six agents hosted by Africa in Focus’s Leonie on an unforgettable educational filled with laughter, great memories, and new relationships. Their portfolio spans across Africa, and we were lucky enough to experience the Garonga lodges, Oliver’s Restaurant & Lodge, and the Dulini Collection in the Sabi Sands Reserve.

Garonga MCH Tented Camp

The beautiful Garonga MCH Tented Camp is a 4-bedroom camp overlooking the Greater Makalali Game Reserve, ideal for FIT guests and families. Each room is identical and named after one of owner Bernie Smith’s siblings. MCH stands for his mother’s name (Maria Carmela Hambleden), making the camp a tribute to his family and their lifelong vision. Suitable for children over 8, the unfenced camp offers night porters to escort guests after dark.

The tranquil setting creates an exclusive yet welcoming atmosphere, combining intimacy with five-star comfort. You are constantly surrounded by the sounds of nature, which makes Garonga so special. The lodge truly felt like a home – I was comfortable throughout and exceptionally well looked after. Every team member plays a vital role, and the attention to detail is evident in everything, from meals and drinks to game drives and housekeeping. Menus are shared in advance and change daily, allowing flexibility and catering to all preferences.

Game drives were fantastic, with excellent sightings despite the dense bush after recent rains. Our guide, Moshe, and tracker, Patrick, both locals, knew the reserve intimately. We were lucky to see a variety of animals, including the elusive leopard.

Garonga also features two additional lodges: Garonga Safari Camp and Little Garonga. Safari Camp, the largest with six tents, has hard walls and tented roofs. Due to the open design, there is no air conditioning, but fans are provided. The spacious main area, with pool and views over waterholes and a dry riverbed, allows for excellent game viewing—even from the privacy of each tent’s deck. This camp is best suited for children over 12 due to the elevated decks.

Little Garonga is more intimate with only three suites,  and offers a more secluded, family-focused experience. Surrounded by bush, it delivers an authentic safari feel. The Hambleden Suite is a 2-bedroom family unit (2 adults + 2 children over 6), featuring a private pool overlooking the dry riverbed. The main bedroom is spacious with indoor and outdoor showers, while the second bedroom connects via the lounge and has its own ensuite.

Garonga is an excellent introduction to safari, offering a natural and immersive experience where every sighting feels meaningful. As our guide said, “all of nature is beautiful”—and I couldn’t agree more. It’s not just a tick-box experience, but one that creates lasting memories. I am confident any guest will have an unforgettable stay.

Oliver’s Restaurant & Lodge in White River

Our next stop was Oliver’s Restaurant & Lodge in White River. This beautiful, owner-run property is carefully managed by Tanja and her team. We were warmly welcomed with a canapés-style lunch, and the lodge’s strong culinary reputation quickly became clear.  Garonga’s Bernie had recommended the famous Austrian apple pie—and it absolutely lived up to expectations.

After settling into our lovely rooms, we enjoyed a theatrical dinner experience. The menu is presented in “phases,” allowing guests to choose anything from a single course to a full five-course meal. Sections include “Opening Acts,” “The Interlude,” “The Main Stage,” “Sweet Serenade,” and “A Cheesy Ending.” It’s interactive, fun, and offers great flexibility – I highly recommend going all in and embracing the full experience!

The next morning, I was treated to a head, shoulder, and neck massage—something I can hardly put into words. It was exceptional, and many of us agreed it was a highlight, with one guest even calling it “life-changing.”

In my opinion, a two-night stay at Oliver’s is a must. Whether at the beginning, middle, or end of a trip, it allows clients to relax, breathe, and reflect. With long travel days and early starts, this is the perfect place to unwind. Oliver’s now also offers in-house Panorama Route tours, which can be pre-booked—ideal for clients needing a slower pace after travel. It’s a space where guests are well cared for, well fed, and treated like stars.

Dulini River Lodge in Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Our final stop was Dulini River Lodge in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve—10,000 hectares of pure safari magic. Despite thick vegetation from recent rains, we enjoyed incredible sightings and smooth driving conditions. The lodge itself is modern and open-plan, with earthy tones reflecting the Sands River surroundings.

Each of the six suites is spacious, featuring a bathtub with a view, indoor and outdoor showers, and a private deck with a heated plunge pool overlooking the river. This offers guests privacy while still being immersed in nature. The game vehicles—recently upgraded—were the most luxurious I’ve experienced, equipped with cushioned railings, storage units, ponchos, binoculars, and thoughtful amenities.

The main lodge area is expansive, with multiple dining spots and a unique deck at river level for a more immersive experience. The team was incredibly warm and welcoming – within minutes, it felt like everyone knew our names. Our guide, Dinamosi, and tracker, Isaac, who have worked together for over 13 years, were outstanding. Even without sightings, every drive was engaging—but we were also fortunate to have five leopard sightings in just two days.

Sabi Sands truly delivers year-round.

We also visited Moya Camp, a charming and authentic safari lodge with six U-shaped suites overlooking the usually dry Mabrak River. The colonial style, vintage décor, and leather finishes create a romantic atmosphere. Outdoor dining is preferred, weather permitting, and the setting is both relaxed and scenic. The iconic old bridge, also used as an emergency exit, adds to the lodge’s character.

Lastly, we visited Dulini Leadwood Lodge, a more intimate and “masculine” property with only four suites. Dark wood finishes and rich tones create a sophisticated feel. The multi-level main area offers privacy while still showcasing river views. Each suite features a large private heated pool, indoor and outdoor showers, and spacious interiors—making it a fantastic option for honeymooners.

All in all, I can confidently recommend each of these properties. Not only do they deliver exceptional quality, but the teams behind them truly elevate the experience. Your clients will feel cared for, valued, and leave with unforgettable memories.

Thank you very much Africa in Focus for having me on this Educational!
