Ilanga Travel discovers new Restaurants!
Anyone who has been to Cape Town knows the food is fantastic. A lot has happened since Covid – many restaurants had to close down, but also many new restaurants have opened their doors to foodies from all over the world. Cape Town’s cuisine has become even more diverse – many kitchens are increasingly adopting a sustainable approach and are using local and seasonal ingredients.
So we decided to test new locations instead of always relying on the well-known places. On a Tuesday evening we went to check out a few new restaurants – all from the same group of owners, and all located on or close to well-known Bree Street, which has become the new hip street of Cape Town’s nightlife.

Nikkei – A New York Feeling in Cape Town. Nikkei is a quite large restaurant with high ceilings and a cosmopolitan feel to it. A fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine is what you can expect to experience – a new trend from the USA and London. The menu is exotic and takes you on a very special culinary journey. Something completely different and it was super delicious!

Hacienda – a modern interpretation of Mexican coastal cuisine. The small, cozy restaurant serves delicious dishes paired with selected tequilas and mezcals. The guacamole is prepared directly at the table in front of the guests and the restaurant has an open charcoal grill. If you like tacos and fish, you’ll love it here!

Burger & Lobsters – Capetonians love burgers – and as the name suggests it is all about burgers & lobsters. This spot is particularly popular with the younger crowd as it transforms from a trendy dinner spot into a lively and bustling bar atmosphere late in the evening. A must do for anyone who does not want to leave after eating but rather enjoy some drinks and a vibey atmosphere!

Iron Steak and Bar – a highlight for anyone who likes steak. Definitely worth a visit! The restaurant features a well-stocked 1920s-style bar, and prides itself on the quality of the meat – free-range, hand-fed and hormone-free. Everything revolves around steaks, which are prepared in an imported Spanish volcano oven. Delicious side dishes and desserts are also served.

Scala Pasta Bar – Pasta a different way! Unlike a typical Italian restaurant, Scala serves classics with a modern twist. The restaurant’s kitchen is behind a glass screen – so everyone can watch the dishes being prepared. The menu was created by Italian Michelin Chef Luciano Monosilo and is a hit in Cape Town! We tried the desserts and they are to die for. The perfect place for a romantic dinner!
