Ilanga Travels North and South of Durban for you
NORTH
Ballito
Vineyard on Ballito

Located relatively high above the Ballito beachfront in a residential area, the guesthouse offers sea views, and has great management. We would however only book sea-facing rooms.
The Boathouse

Featuring 19 rooms and a big restaurant and terrace, this an old fashioned hotel, directly on the sea-front. We would only book the standard twin sea-facing or Honeymoon suite sea-facing, as the luxury rooms only have double beds – not twins.
As an alternative, Shangri-La Guesthouse is located just opposite the Boathouse, and looks a bit newer.
Shakas Rock
Canelands Beach Club

This property has a relaxed and vibey feel, with direct access to the beach from the pool terrace. There is a coffee shop and restaurant, and the property is supported by friendly and welcoming staff.
Lalaria Shakas Rock

Lalaria has a lovely location about 200m from the beach with a big terrace, generous public areas and spacious rooms.
Umdloti
Drifters Greenfire B&B

Situated in a cul-de-sac at the end of beach road, this is in quite a remote location. The rooms are very small and public areas are minimalistic . Best described as up-market backpacker style.
Fairlight B&B

Fairlight has a good location within a short walking distance from the centre of Umdloti. The best rooms are Michelle and Louise, which are sea-front facing. Management (Katy) is very friendly and accommodating.
SOUTH
San Lameer

Approximately 150km drive from the centre of Durban, the golf course and hotel are separately managed and there is separate access to the grounds. The hotel has not been refurbished in recent years and is bordering on 3 star accommodation (local market). Restaurant and bar are canteen style, and there is a Camelot spa for estate owners only. The pool terrace faces a lagoon with active bird life.
The golf course has a new restaurant and public facilities and a well-stocked pro-shop. The course has a tight layout and lots of water features, and is not an easy course to play.
As an alternative:
Southbroom Golf Course

This is a lovely little 18 hole course with a friendly and busy feel, and it has great sea views – it is also a larger layout than San Lameer.
The Blue Horizon guesthouse with three rooms is a 2 minute drive from the course, and has a good location and views, and has a pool area.

Selborne Golf Course

The Selborne has been under new ownership for the past 9 months (First Hotels). There have been no renovations yet, but everything is very neat. This was “The Fancourt” of the nineties. Fairway suites are facing the golf course, and the standard rooms also have fairway views. The golf course appeared in good condition.
Botha House

Located in Pennington in the Umdoni Park, Botha House has 6 rooms and partial sea views. The property is bordering the golf course, and has lovely public areas, terrace and pool with generous gardens.
Umdoni Park Golf course

Umdoni Park Golf Course is owned by the owners of Botha House and this allows easy access onto the course, just next to Botha House. There are breathtaking views from over three quarters of the 18 hole golf course.
Lynton Hall

Located opposite Selborne Park, 1.5km into the forest, Lynton Hall is closed on weekends if there are no bookings and is now only open for exclusive use functions and weddings.
